Why I Want to Legalize Prostitution in Dayton
Back in the late 1800s/early 1900s, Dayton had a well-known red lights district, operated by a woman you can still go visit in Woodland Cemetery. Her name was Elizabeth Richter, but she went by Lib, or Lizzie, for short. Whenever they tried to shut her brothel down, she would just threaten to release her little black book of names of who went there (which included lots of local politicians), and she would be left alone. She also donated a large sum of money to help rebuild after the flood, so Dayton literally owes its survival, in part, to sex work. Every time you visit the post office or a friend at Dayton Towers, you're in her old stomping grounds.
Our puritanical nature in this country has always made sex a taboo topic. That doesn't stop people from seeking it, (and on its face, nor should it) however. Why are we spending time telling people who are consenting adults what they can and can't do with their bodies, as long as it is between consenting adults?
Meanwhile, Dayton is a hotbed for human trafficking because of our proximity to I75/I70/s crossing point, and therefore we know why so many people are getting arrested here for it. We likely aren't even scratching the surface.
But, if we could differentiate between legal paid sex and illegal paid sex, it would allow us to focus our efforts far more on the underage human trafficking that plagues this city, state, country, and world. It would also enable us to be more proactive in enforcing safer best practice standards that are important in the sex industry.
And yes, it is an industry. Sex work is work. I just prefer a union shop. Let's let today's Lizzies operate legally once more and use the economic benefit it generates for Dayton instead of letting an illegal industry thrive that can prey on the young. Let's take it out of the darkness and bring it into the light of scrutiny to ensure that no one is getting taken advantage of in this city.
So, let's take a small step in the right direction now and help de-stigmatize consenting sex between adults, and let's double our efforts on going after those who are seeking illegal sex with minors or individuals who have been trafficked.
